The Birth of the Avalanche
We all fondly remember the SUV heyday of the mid to late 1990s, a glorious time when gasoline was under a dollar a gallon, the majority had given us one of the most prosperous economic environments in the last quarter century, and all was well. Saturday mornings were full of cartoon characters dropping one another off cliffs and into submission, and the Canadian National Railway cars ran along the St. Albans Railways seemingly every ten minutes. It was in this time that the Sport Utility Vehicle really took off--granted there were some that had already been around for decades, but in this time we saw every company under the sun make their own off-road sport vehicle.
And these weren't just sport utility vehicles mind you, they were monstrous creations of the Norse God Odin, made to carry all the weight he himself could throw into it; the only problem was they were in themselves too heavy to be efficient. Suddenly the millennium changed, gasoline consumption became a newsworthy topic, and the SUV "gas guzzler," as it was coined, was no longer acceptable at 4 miles per gallon. So what do we, the children of the 90s, have do to get our gas guzzling fix nowadays? The answer is simple, yet refined: the 2010 Chevrolet Avalanche, as literally put as possible the best of both worlds.
You see, where the early SUVs had it wrong was their overpowering size. This is better suited for a truck, but as stated, sometimes you need the versatility of the SUV, be it cargo space, seating, off-road capability, etc. And sure, a truck can accomplish these feats, but is the seating always available?
Enter the 2010 Chevrolet Avalanche, introduced in a time when the idea of truck/SUV hybrid was laughable. Putting together the best aspects of an SUV-passenger space and comfort-with the rugged stability and power of the best Chevrolet trucks, the Chevrolet Avalanche is great for those that love trucks and SUVs equally, as well as the ambivalent-type like myself that looks at either model and cannot decide. Since the initial drive off the factory line, the Avalanche has been based on the full-sized General Motors SUV frame, meaning the underpinnings and the powertrain are exactly like that of, for example, Suburban. As Edmunds.com puts it "this vehicle is for those that require a 'jack of all trades.'"The intrigue of the Avalanche lies in what Chevrolet calls the "midgate," a tailgate of sorts that isn't on "the tail." By flipping this gate up or down, one can change the vehicle from a Regular Cab truck with an eight-foot bed to a six-passenger cabin and a five-foot bed, respectively. This is a very basic description, however, as you can remove and add cargo covers and storage compartments to reflect the current use/position of the vehicle.
Under the Hood
Available in three trim levels (LS, LT, and LTZ), the 2010 Chevrolet Avalanche is nothing if not customizable. All models come with a powerful 5.3-Liter V8 pushing 310 horsepower and 335 pound-feet of torque, making this truck/SUV combination a lethal dose of muscle for any would-be troublesome payload. Given the large size of this truck, one would assume it has the handling of a truck, but it really compares better to its smaller SUV brethren. I found the Avalanche to handle more like an Equinox and generally far better (again, simply in handling) than the Silverado 1500.
The Interior
Interior options include leather seating, heated seats, seven premier, high-end speakers, a great variety of music options (i.e. auxiliary input, CD player, etc.), a moon roof, several wheel packages, and a trial subscription for both satellite radio and OnStar, the latter which gives you hands free calling and the peace of mind you desire. Also, to keep your passengers subdued there are rear-audio system controls.
