The main function of transmission fluid in an automatic transmission is to provide hydraulic power used to perform basic functions:  gear-changing, transmission engagement or disengagement, and downshifting, for example.  Unlike a manual transmission which uses user-operated clutches, gear shifts, linkages, and more to shift, the automatic Chevrolet vehicle - which many nowadays are of course - use the transmission fluid to do those jobs, well, automatically.  By essentially converting the transmission fluid into pressure and providing a physical force or pressure, these automatic functions are possible.
